The Impact of a Culture-Sensitive Intake Assessment on the Treatment of a Depressed Biracial Child

Cultural competence is a required skill set for all mental health professionals. The range of necessary skills is wide and can therefore be intimidating. However, mental health professionals need not be overwhelmed by the scope of diversity competence in practice. Through presentation of a case involving treatment of an 11-year-old, depressed biracial female, this article demonstrates how a culturally competent assessment forms the basis for culturally competent case conceptualization and treatment. The authors suggest that the professional can begin to transform knowledge and awareness into competent practices by developing culturally competent intake assessment skills. Culture-sensitive assessment techniques increase the probability that the professional will find implementation of culturally competent treatment reasonable and attainable.
