University of Nevada, Las Vegas Selective mutism can be a potentially debilitating mental disorder that affects about 1% of youth. Unfortunately, this population remains under-researched, and very little information is available regarding the treatment of diverse youth with selective mutism. This article reports on the successful treatment of a 10-year-old Hispanic female with selective mutism. Treatment was largely behavioral in nature and consisted of exposure-based practices and contingency management.
