The Case of Jane

A Pinean Approach

Max Harris

Robert C. Lane

One of the goals of psychodynamic psychotherapy is to address not only patients’ symptoms but also their personality dynamics. In this case, a psychodynamic approach based on the four psychologies (drive, ego, object, self) suggested by Fred Pine was used to facilitate assessment, to guide psychotherapy, and to evaluate the outcomes. It is proposed that this eclectic and integrative approach honors the richness of the dignity and tragedy of the human condition.

Key Words: drive • ego • object • self • developmental theory • four psychologies
