The Institute for Individual, Marital, and Family Therapy The factors that predispose to suicide pacts strongly parallel those factors that predispose to folie à deux, a phenomenon in which psychoses transfer from a mentally ill person to a mentally healthier one. Review of recent literature reveals scant coverage of the joint occurrence of these phenomena, especially between children. This article presents a case study of two brothers who possibly represent a rare instance of folie à deux and subsequent suicide pact between children. Discussion following the case study targets the role of separation in the treatment of folie à deux and uncertainties in diagnosing suicide pacts among children.
