An Integrative Approach to Industrial Trauma Within Emergency Service OccupationsU.S. Department of Defense Two cognitive-behavioral approaches to the reduction of emotional trauma were combined and used successfully to treat a police officer in eight individual sessions. Elements of critical incident stress management were added to a constructive narrative approach, yielding a therapeutic frameworkthat helped the officer view traumatic events experienced in the line of duty as formative. Several educational factors also characterized this case. These include the need to understand first responder professions within a quasicultural context, the impact of past physical and sexual abuse, and factors to consider when working with children of deaf parents.
